Our Stump Grinding Process

Professional Service from Start to Finish

Step 1: Initial Assessment

First, our technician assesses your stump(s) at the site:

  • Assesses the size of each stump; the type of tree, and its condition.
  • Determines how many stumps require service.
  • Identifies potential accessibility challenges that may affect equipment placement.
  • Identifies possible underground utility issues.
  • Identifies surrounding landscape features that need protection.
  • Determine how deep the stump should be ground based on what you have planned for the future.

Step 2: Site Preparation

Before grinding, our technician prepares the working area:

  • Mark the location of underground utilities if required.
  • Protects plants, structures, and hardscape near the area to be worked.
  • Position equipment for best access.
  • Establishes safety barriers around the area to be worked.
  • Covers sensitive areas where wood chip dispersal could occur.

Step 3: Stump Grinding

Utilizing professional-grade stump grinders, we remove your stump by grinding it:

  • The stump grinder’s cutting wheel rotates in a circular motion to grind the stump.
  • Grind the stump 6 – 12 inches below grade (or as deep as you desire).
  • Grind as much of the surface root system as is required to effectively remove the stump.
  • Continue grinding until the stump is fully eliminated beneath grade.

Step 4: Wood Chip Disposal/Spread

Following grinding, the remaining wood chips can be disposed of or used as mulch around your yard. We provide three options for disposal/spread:

  • Dispose: Remove all grindings from the site and leave the area clear.
  • Disperse: Spread grindings throughout the yard as mulch.
  • Partially Dispose: Remove most of the grindings but leave some behind for use as fill.

Step 5: Final Clean-up

Upon completion of grinding, we will take steps to restore the site:

  • Fill in the resulting depression using grindings, topsoil, or allow it to settle.
  • Rake and clean the area.
  • Remove debris and sawdust.
  • Inspect the area to ensure quality performance.

Step 6: Recommendations for Future Yard Work

Provide guidance regarding the area’s future use:

  • Recommendations for immediate seeding/sodding.
  • Timeline for when you may install hardscape.
  • Suggest plantings and planting times.
  • Recommend soil amendments if replanting.

When to Schedule Stump Grinding

The Best Time To Grind Stumps

Grinding Immediately Following Tree Removal – The best time to grind stumps will be right after the tree has been removed. In many cases we can complete both tasks on one trip, which will save you time and money.

Spring & Fall – These two seasons are ideal for grinding stumps because of their moderate temperature, reasonable moisture content, and suitable times to seed or plant the area once it has been ground.

Prior to Installation of New Landscape Features – Grind stumps prior to installation of patios, decks, pools, gardens etc. It will eliminate possible issues with the new landscape feature and allow for an uncluttered work space.

Prior to Listing Your Home For Sale – Remove stumps prior to listing your home. Potential buyers prefer to look at homes that do not have stumps; and removing them as a homeowner can also potentially be less expensive than negotiating as part of the sale of the home.

Following Winter Ground Thaw (Winter Considerations) – We grind stumps all year long however thawing ground or extremely wet ground can make grinding difficult. Ideal times to grind stumps are usually late winter through early spring when the ground has thawed and before the heavy spring rains start.

At Anytime You Are Ready – There is no bad time to grind stumps if they are causing problems. We work all year long and can accommodate your scheduling needs.
